Cover Letter Into One PDF

An Applicant Tracking System parses your PDF into plain text before a recruiter ever sees it. Merging two documents does not change how they're parsed — but a few habits keep the combined file clean and machine-readable:

• Keep both documents as real, selectable-text PDFs. If either file is a scanned image or a photo of a printout, the ATS reads nothing. Export from Word, Google Docs, or Pages directly to PDF rather than scanning a printed copy.
• Use standard fonts. Arial, Calibri, Helvetica, and Times New Roman render reliably. Decorative or embedded webfonts sometimes garble when the ATS extracts text.
• Avoid text inside images, tables, or multi-column layouts for the resume itself. Many ATS engines read left-to-right, top-to-bottom and can scramble columns.
• Name the file professionally — Firstname-Lastname-Application.pdf is clearer to a recruiter than merged-final-v3.pdf.
• Check the page order in the preview before you download. Cover letter first, then resume, is the convention most recruiters expect.

Because our merge runs entirely in your browser, none of these documents — with your name, address, phone number, and work history — are ever transmitted to a server. That matters more for a job application than almost any other kind of file, since a resume is a compact, ready-made identity profile.
